One example is Indonesian. The Indonesian language (known as “Bahasa Indonesia”) is a fascinating and complex language with a rich history dating back thousands of years. It is the official language of Indonesia and is spoken by approximately 300 million people worldwide.

Indonesian can be traced back to the ancient kingdoms of Java and Sumatra. These kingdoms developed their unique languages, which were influenced by Sanskrit, Arabic, and other languages of the region. Over time, these languages evolved and eventually merged to form the modern Indonesian language we know today.

The development of this beautiful, complex language was also influenced by a rather dark period of its country’s history: the Dutch colonization of Indonesia. Like many other colonial powers worldwide, the Dutch and their language influenced their colonies and how language developed in them.

The modern Indonesian language is based on Malay. It is vibrant and dynamic – a chameleon, influenced by many other languages, even today, as Indonesia continues to evolve and change with the times.

Of course, with such a rich history and influence, any interpreter must understand the intricacies of respecting its culture and people.
