He/she may have spent a summer in Paris during high school, or even possess a Bachelor鈥檚 degree with a minor in Spanish, but professional translators and interpreters have credentials, diplomas, and years of experience under their belt.
  2. An excellent Project Manager will really make a difference. We invite you to read 鈥�What to Look for in a Language Services Provider鈥� for more information on how to more efficiently work with a team that specializes in professional linguistic services.
  3. Give yourself ample time to prepare your project or event. Remember that interpreters and translators are not machines. Translation involves research, editing, proofreading, among other details. Yes, most professional translators are bilingual (or almost), but translation is more than merely 鈥渢yping the text in another language鈥�. Just because someone is bilingual 诲辞别蝉苍鈥檛 mean that he/she knows every technical term in every subject matter. Preparation is key.

1. 鈥�Interpretation is not translation!鈥� Professional translators and interpreters may have different skills, but they are held to the same high professional standards.

3. Interpreters need to prepare for your event 鈥� like anyone, they 诲辞苍鈥檛 want to be sent into a meeting about an unfamiliar topic and be expected to do great. So please do not hesitate to share your documents with your linguists, even if 颈迟鈥檚 at the last minute: 颈迟鈥檚 always best to have some information 鈥� such as the participant’s list and some technical terms 鈥� right in front of you, rather than nothing at all. Keep in mind that interpreters usually work in teams, so while one of them is interpreting, the other one can help by following the flow of the conversation and looking for the translation of technical terms.
4. Any professional interpreter understands that confidentiality is key, and will abide by their code of ethics. They will keep everything confidential, study your material, and the quality will be better for it. So again 鈥� do not hesitate to share information about your event with your interpreters.
5. Interpretation might not be exactly like in the movies! Sure, the job itself may sound glamorous, but there鈥檚 only so much Hollywood can do with a medical conference on urology鈥�
6. No, just because an interpreter works from one language 诲辞别蝉苍鈥檛 mean that they can interpret into that language. Interpreters and translators sometimes refer to their A, B, C languages 鈥� and these are not interchangeable.
7. Compliant, safe, well-maintained, professional interpretation equipment is key to the success of your event. Your hotel might not have equipment that is up to your or your interpreters鈥� standards. If interpreters cannot hear well, they cannot interpret properly, and defective equipment will be disruptive to the flow of your conference. 8. Clients requesting services into Mandarin vs. Cantonese or Traditional vs. Simplified Chinese should understand the differences between these. They should also keep in mind the regional differences between Mainland China and Taiwan to avoid any political tensions between delegations.
9. This may be every interpreter鈥檚 pet peeve: Presenters, please speak at a reasonable pace! Speakers of some languages are infamous for speaking extremely fast during their presentations (you know who you are). Consider this: French, Italian and Spanish use about 20-30% more words than English to express the same ideas. Now think of how quickly your interpreter will have to speak to cover everything you are saying if 测辞耻鈥檙别 speaking at 100 miles an hour鈥� Ensuring presenters speak at a reasonable pace will help interpreters relay what you are saying with more clarity and accuracy. 10. Finally, if you are going to read your speech, please provide it to your interpreters. A little added preparation goes a long way.

• You might consider yourself comfortable in a foreign language 鈥� a.k.a. 鈥�fluent鈥� 鈥� after a few years of studying a language in school, but that is nowhere close to being able to interpret it beyond a few sentences at a professional level.
• This is very different from being bilingual, which means able to use two languages with equal听fluency.
• In the professional translation and conference interpretation world, a 鈥�true bilingual鈥� has two 鈥淎鈥� languages, meaning two languages at the same native level. True bilinguals can discuss anything at the same native level in two different languages, from things that are very cultural 鈥� like nursery rhymes 鈥� to more technical things 鈥� like taxes or chemistry, and with no accent whatsoever. Needless to say, true trilinguals are even rarer, and some in the T&I industry even question whether they even exist鈥�

• Do you need a certification or attestation of translation of any sort, and for what specific purpose?

  • The event鈥檚 schedule: Also important to determine overtime, for instance, and to which room to assign interpreters and when. Keep in mind that interpreters, who usually work in teams, are just like any human beings and need adequate rest to provide the best quality and prevent interpreter fatigue.
  • Your equipment needs: Remember that simultaneous interpreters will need equipment, and basic things like chairs, lamps, some air 鈥� and water. And if equipment is necessary, where and when can it be installed? Do you have the floor plan of the conference room, and any space criteria?

  • The name and address of the venue, building, and/or room number(s) where the event will take place (or other information to identify the location);
  • The exact location where interpreters can pick up their badges or name tags (if these will be used);
  • The equipment setup schedule: setup usually happens the day before the event in the afternoon or evening. It could take up to 120 minutes for a technician to set up equipment (or longer, depending on the requirements);
  • Any loading or unloading instructions that may be of help. Keep in mind that you may have to make special arrangements with the venue to make sure this happens.

Furthermore 鈥� and this is very important 鈥� in the US there is no such thing as a 鈥渃ourt-certified translator鈥�, rather, only certified or registered court interpreters who certify their own written translations. When a certified or registered court interpreter certifies a translation, they guarantee the translation is accurate and complete to the best of their knowledge and ability; the phrase 鈥渢o the best of their knowledge and ability鈥� is critical because people are human and mistakes can happen.

Therefore, someone advertising him/herself as a certified court translator in the US is either lying, 听or they 诲辞苍鈥檛 know what they are talking about. In either case, stay away from them! And if they claim to be certified, remember to always ask by whom 鈥� which company, association, organization, etc. For your own protection, always check their credentials to avoid being put at risk of embarrassing or debilitating situations if the translations you鈥檝e built a case around are inaccurate.

Also, remember that certified court interpreters are highly-trained language service professionals. While both certified and registered court interpreters have passed oral and written exams, the oral exams for the certified court interpreters are usually much more advanced and include an actual oral interpretation test.

For legal document translations, only trust a qualified professional translator who has legal experience, niche familiarity, and subject matter expertise (SME) pertaining to the particular case or required documentation. Finally, certified and notarized documents both have legal weight 鈥� but they are not the same thing. So if you are asked to provide a 鈥渘otarized translation鈥�, we recommend that you check exactly what is required. Chances are, the person requesting this might not be using the right terminology.

Certification ensures a document is 鈥渙fficial.鈥� However, this 诲辞别蝉苍鈥檛 necessarily mean that any information filled out by an individual is accurate.

As to a notarized document, it 诲辞别蝉苍鈥檛 have anything to do with whether a document is 鈥渙fficial鈥�. It simply means a notary public verified that the person who signed the document also provided legal identification verifying their identity, or that a copy is indeed a true copy of the original.

Based on this, in the US, a translation itself can be certified (as accurate and complete) by a certified court interpreter, but it cannot be notarized 鈥� the signature affixed to it can be notarized, however.

An is yet another type of certificate unrelated to any type of translation.

Never trust machine translations for legal documents 鈥� or anything else

Learn the difference between the 4 Ts of written documents

As professional translators, our job is to transfer intent, meaning, and energy from a document鈥檚 source language to the target language. To do this, however, we may have to use one or more of three elements 鈥� transcription, transliteration, and transcreation.

By understanding a little bit more about what each one is, and how it will 鈥� or could 鈥� come to play in your future translation projects, your conversations and strategic meetings with your translation team will be more efficient and targeted, with less time spent with the team explaining semantics or intent.

Translation defined

The process of translation transfers the direct meaning and feeling (or essence) of the written word from one language to another. Notice the inclusion of 鈥渇eeling鈥� and 鈥渆ssence鈥� there? As you can imagine, those two frequently make a big difference compared to simple word-for-word replacements, which are based only on word meaning or definition. This idea is most obvious when we look at idioms (words, phrases or expressions that mean something other than their literal translation).

A comprehensive translation considers multiple factors, including meaning, grammar, contextual meaning, and cultural sensitivities. Let鈥檚 take an easy example: if you come across a part of a story where a character says 鈥測ou are dead meat鈥︹�� 鈥� that is not going to translate well into Spanish if you do a pure word-for-word substitution. In this case, 鈥測ou are dead meat鈥� means 鈥測ou are a dead man鈥�. So the translator needs to come up with an equally compelling expression (most likely a Spanish idiom) to capture that same energy or meaning.

This is also the main reason why machine translations are never effective for high-quality translation work. Their tendency to perform black-and-white, literal translations (or word-for-word substitutions) means clients end up with 鈥渢ranslated鈥� products that are awkward at best, and completely confusing or even horrifying at worst.

As professional translators, when we do our job well, translated documents are read smoothly and intuitively; they鈥檒l 鈥渇eel鈥� as if they were written in the target language from the start, which is always the ultimate objective a translator wants to achieve.

On to transcription

Transcription is the process of putting a sound recording into spoken words. In other words, it is the act of typing whatever is said in a video or tape in the same language. The transcript is the end result of that process.

If you want to translate an audio or video recording, chances are you will first need to transcribe it before the transcript can be translated into another language.

Continuing with transliteration

Transliteration has more to do with sound than meaning. Transliteration is used, for example, for a language that uses characters other than Roman characters (the ones we use to write in English). Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, etc. 鈥� all these languages may require transliteration, for instance, for an English speaker who cannot read foreign characters or alphabets.

For example, in Japanese, the phrase good morning is written: 銇娿伅銈堛亞銇斻仏銇勩伨銇�. Since your American executives probably 肠补苍鈥檛 read hiragana, one of Japan鈥檚 written forms, we鈥檇 use transliteration to spell, 翱丑补测艒驳辞锄补颈尘补蝉耻, so 颈迟鈥檚 at least legible to them in the script. 听Transliteration would also make it possible to write 鈥済ood morning鈥� in English using Japanese characters so a Japanese speaker could pronounce 鈥済ood morning鈥� in English just by reading the Japanese characters — but probably with a heavy accent and without understanding what they are actually saying.

Understanding transcreation

Transcreation is a deeper level of translation. It is a term used mainly by marketing and advertising experts and professionals to describe the process of adapting a message from one language to another language, while maintaining its intent, style, tone, and context 鈥� 鈥渓ocalizing鈥� the message to the country where it is going to be used. Advertisements, commercials, mottos, and slogans, which often use figurative language (metaphors, similes, analogies or colloquialisms) will typically require transcreation 鈥� a process that preserves everything that is conveyed by the written or spoken word that 肠补苍鈥檛 be translated word for word into the target language without losing or changing its meaning or intent.

Translations may require all four of the Ts

Translation projects may require a combination of transcription, transliteration, and transcreation. Keep in mind that transcreation requires the largest amount of time and energy. If your document is full of colloquialisms because it strikes a conversational tone, it will probably require more time to translate than something that is more straightforward or technical. If this is a problem for you or your budget, work with writers or your in-house team to simplify documents before sending them off to the translators.听It is also important that you, as a client, are very clear on any words or proprietary phrases, slogans, trademarks, etc., that you 诲辞苍鈥檛 want to be changed at all.
