St. Jerome, the Patron Saint听Of听Translators听
听
Saint Jerome (c.鈥347鈥 c.鈥420) was not only a Catholic priest but also a historian and theologian who first began the herculean effort to translate the Bible into the common Latin tongue in the 4th鈥痗entury. But Saint Jerome didn鈥檛 just听commission听the听Vulgate听Bible听translation from the听Greek; he also translated parts of the Hebrew Gospels听into Greek. Of Illyrian ancestry听(likely in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina), he learned Latin in school and picked up both Hebrew and Greek over the years. Languages, you could say, came naturally to him.听听
鈥Languages 鈥 More than a Profession听
Traduttore,听traditore: Translator, traitor.鈥This ingenious consonance听was first used by enraged听Italians听for whom听French听translations of Dante鈥檚 work听betrayed his听work鈥檚 beauty听and听accuracy. It also听played on the deepest听fears听of a听multilingual,听international听society.听
For centuries, translation has played an indispensable role in moving civilization forward, both scientifically and philosophically. This is as true now as it was long ago.听
In听today鈥檚 modern听world,听however,听with computer-generated translations available on almost every smartphone and computer, International Translation Day is a good opportunity to draw attention to the hard-working, human听professionals who give a personal touch to language,听translating cultures as well as languages,听and for whom translation is not just a听job, but a calling.听
Some, when first听learning a new language, find it difficult to grasp new words and听grammatical听structures, while others take to the task with ease. For a few lucky ones, like Saint Jerome, languages听come听easy听鈥撎齛lmost as if it were听in their blood.听听
A few of those听fortunate ones听often go on to become听translators and interpreters. In this chosen occupation, they play an important part in听bringing nations together, assist in facilitating dialogue and cooperation between those divided by language barriers, and contribute to healing a divided world.听
Without professional translators, much would be literally听lost in translation. There is nothing like person-based听translation to avoid the pitfalls of missed nuances or cultural diversity that a听machine-generated translation听simply听cannot pick up. That is where these听highly听trained experts听step in.
The Origin of International Translation Day听
International Translation Day was first launched in 1991 by the International Federation of Translators听(est. in 1953)听to show solidarity with the growing worldwide community of translators and to draw attention to听its听ever-growing contribution in the age of globalization.鈥听
Then, on May 24, 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted听, recognizing the role translators play in connecting the world and assisting the UN in working closer toward听their goal of strengthening world peace and international security.听Through this resolution, September鈥30th was officially declared听International Translation Day.鈥听
Since 2005, the United Nations has invited its staff, students from select universities, and accredited permanent missions staff to compete in the UN鈥檚 St. Jerome Translation Contest. This contest is a celebration of multilingualism and draws further attention to the role translators play in the world of international diplomacy. The contest rewards the best translations in a multitude of languages. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 contest was held online to ensure this inspiring event could go ahead.
The Role of Translators in the World听
International Translation Day is an opportunity to honor those experts that work tirelessly day after day to connect people, from those working within the United Nations organization to those in many different capacities everywhere.听
Scientific, technical, and academic works all rely on听highly听trained professionals听to translate content properly so it can be shared with experts around the world.
